This month’s Item Of The Month was chosen by our Librarian Peter Harley.
You’ll be forgiven for believing this cheerfully colour printed postcard. It depicts a young woman laying on a beach beneath an ‘at Littleport’ heading with the phrase ‘Come and join me’ on the sand beneath. It’s been quite some time since Littleport was by the sea!

The woman is printed on a cardboard flap, that when lifted, sees 12 small black and white postcard images of Littleport tumble down – albeit without further evidence of the beach.

The postcard is unused, but on the reverse is printed ‘Pocket Novelty Card’ and ‘If any message is written, Letter Postage is required. Five Words of a complimentary character, ½d. Postage’.
Beach or no beach, either way we do invite you to ‘come and join’ us here in Littleport, and why not join the Society too, and support our work in preserving Littleport’s heritage?
H. Coates of Wisbech
The photographs within the folded concertina were produced by photographer H. Coates of Wisbech, who operated in Wisbech from 1910 through to the 1960s. He was joined by his twin sons Kenneth and Donald, thus making it H. Coates & Sons.
We have quite a few of H. Coates & Sons‘ postcards in our archive, as they covered Wisbech and the broader East Anglia region.
